Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What elements are involved?
Two non-metals are involved in covalent bonding
Are ions formed?
An ion is not formed as covalent bonds do not lose or gain electrons, they share.
Behaviour of valence electrons
Both atoms in the bond contribute one valence electron in order to form a shared pair.
Electrical conductivity
Covalent bonds do not conduct electricity because the molecules are neutral and there are no charged particles to move freely and carry charge.
Solubility
Covalent bonds are soluble in non-polar solvents, however they are insoluble in polar solvents such as water
Additional properties
Low boiling and melting points and they are soft and flexible.
Examples
SiO2 - Silicon Dioxide
Dinitrogen Trioxide - N2O3
