Metal Structure and Properties Flashcards
What is an example of a physical property of metal?
- The high thermal conductivity of copper makes it useful for the bases of saucepans
- Being malleable
- Ductile
- Shiny
- Lustrous
What is an example of a chemical property of metal?
Gold is resistance to attack by oxygen, water or acids which is why it is useful for jewellery.
Why do metals have high mp and bp?
They have strong metallic bonds which need a lot of energy to be broken.
What is a metallic bond?
A strong electrostatic force of attraction between positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons.
Why do metals conduct electricity easily?
The delocalised electrons within its structure are free to move.
What are superconductors?
Metals that can conduct electricity with little or no resistance.
What happens to magnets are they go near a substance when it goes into a superconductive state?
They are repelled because they substance loses its magnetic field.
What are the potential benefits of superconductors?
- Loss-free power transmission
- Super-fast electronic circuits
- Powerful electromagnets
What is holding back the production of superconductors?
They only work at very lo temperatures so superconductors that work at 20*C need to be developed.
