Group 1 Elements Flashcards
1
Q
What properties do group 1 elements have?
A
- React vigorously with water
- Hydrogen gas is produced
- Form an alkali when reacting with water, the hydroxide of the metal
2
Q
How can we predict which elements will react more vigorously than others?
A
As you go down the group they become more reactive.
3
Q
Why does reactivity increase as you go down the group?
A
There are more shells so the atomic radius increases. The increased distance between the electron in the outer shell and the protons in the nucleus weakens the attraction so it is easier for the electron to be lost.
4
Q
What is oxidation?
A
The loss of electrons.
5
Q
What do we use flame tests for?
A
To see if lithium, sodium or potassium are in a compound.
6
Q
What is the process of the flame test?
A
- Flame-test wire is moistened with dilute HCl
- Flame-test wire is dipped into the solid chemical
- It is placed into a blue Bunsen burner flame
- The colours of the flame are recorded
7
Q
Which colours represent which element?
A
Lithium - red
Sodium - yellow
Potassium - lilac
