3
Q

How can we predict the reactivity of halogens?

A

As you go down the group the less reactivity there is.

Q

Why is there less reactivity further down the group?

A

There are more outer shells so the atomic radius increases. This weakens the attraction between the protons in the nucleus and the electrons in the outer shell so it is harder to attract another electron from other elements.

6
Q

When do displacement reactions occur?

A

When halogens are bubbled through metal halide solutions and the halogen element is more reactive than the halogen in the halide compound.
