Metal casting key terms Flashcards
Pattern
an aproximate dupilcate of the final casting used to form the mold cavity
Mold Cavity
the impression in a mold produced by removal of pattern. it is filled with molten metal during pouring to form the casting
Flask
the rigid wood or metal frame used to hold the molding material
Drag
bottom of flask
Cope
Top of flask
Core
insert placed into the mold to shape the interior of the mold that normally can’t be formed by a pattern
Shakeout
the procces after intial solidfification where the solid casting is removed from the mold and flask.
Ladle
The tool that is used to transfer molten metal from the furnace to the metal. usually a container.
a core makes the blank. a core forms the
Mold. the core
chaplet
a small metal insert placed into the mold cavity to provide support for the core.
corebox
The wooden, metal, or plastic tool that has a cavity that is used to shape and produce cores
Sprue
hole that connects the pouring cup and to enter the runner. controls the flow of molten metal in mold.
Pouring basin
hole where molten metal is poured and enters the mold
Runner
a set of channels that connects the sprue to the ingates allowing molten metal to enter the mold cavity
order of molten flow
Pouring basin, Sprue, Runner, Runner extension, Gating system, mold cavity, core, mold cavity again, Riser.
