Ch. 4 Gating sytems Flashcards
4 main points of the Gating System
Clean molten metal, Smooth filling of the casting cavity.
Uniform filling of the casting cavity.
Complete filling of the casting cavity.
Types of gating system
Horizontal( normal for what we are doing). Vertical for tall castings
Order of gating system
Pouring basin, spruce, runnerbar, runner extension, ingates, core, back to runner, riser to remove impurities
Gating ratio
The the andthe between the cross andsectional area of the sprue vs area of runner vs cra of gating sytem.
biggest difference between pressurized gating and non pressurized gating.
the smallest cross-sectional area is the Gating system for pressurized . bottom of spruefor non- pressurized
How much should runner’s width be blank times the runner’s height or depth?
twice as much
Pouring Basin
a reservoir where the molten metal enters into the gating system. should be made deep enough to prevent turbulence.
Runner Bar
A channel that connects from the sprue to the runner extension letting the metal enter the mold cavity
Runner Extension
from the runner bar used to trap and remove some of the impurities from the metal.
Ingates
openings through which molten metal enters the mold cavity.
how should ingates be made
made so that metal enters quickly into the mold cavity
gaitng sytem
as smooth as possible to prevent turbulance
Sprue well should have
smooth holes to better allow for better flow
What determines fluidlility
Narrow freezing range.
Yield
Metal of final casting/ weight of metal poured x 100
