Ch.8 special casting methods Flashcards
Permanent Mold Casting
where molten metal is poured into a permanent metal mold.
Diecasting
Where molten metal is injected into a mold under pressure
Centrifugal casting
molten metal is poured into a mold that is rapidly rotated about a central axis. the centrifugal force throws the molten metal against the wall and fills up the shape of the casting.
Investment casting
- Multiple patterns are on a cluster
- It is dipped or investments into A binder resulting in a thin ceramic shell
- It is then dried
- Finally heated up to remove the pattern
what is hot chamber casting
metal is held at a high temperature in the holding furnace, keeping it molten between cycles.
what is cold chamber diecasting
metal is injected when needed and solidifies in the unheated chamber after each cycle. shot chamber
what is lost foam casting
a technique that utilizes a mold made from a plastic foam and a ceramic refractory covering it. the sand holds the mold in place while metal is poured into it. the foam then evaporates into a gas leaving the desired metal shape.
