Metabolism Pt 1 Flashcards
Exergonic and Endergonic
Exergonic:
Type of reaction that releases energy and proceeds spontaneously
Endergonic:
Type of reaction where energy is required and not proceeds spontaneously
Why does the hydrolysis on the 3rd phosphate of Atp release energy
`The bond between the terminal end and second phosphate is too high, which is because the phosphates are negatively charged so they repel each other and are unstable. Once the bond is broken lots of energy is released as the products become more stable.
What is coupled reactions
Cells use exergonic reactions to release energy to produce ATP. Which, then energy is used from the hydrolysis of ATP to power endergonic reactions.
What are electron carriers
Pick up electrons from energy rich compounds and drop them off to low energy compounds
NADH — NAD+ (Oxidized)
FADH2 — FAD (Oxidized)
What is the need for glycolysis
Breaks down glucose into energy
