Metabolism Flashcards
What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum of processes necessary to sustain life.
What happends during the fed state?
This is when you are intaking substances that give you energy such as food. This is where the food that you eat will give you energy and use it and what is left over will be saved for later.
What happens during the fasting state?
This state happens between meals, skips meals, or even when you sleep, this is where there is no new intake that gives you energy, so what this does is the energy that is stored from previous will be released and will circulate around the body for energy.
What is catabolism?
Catabolism is the breakdown of molecule from big to small giving us energy.
What is anabolism?
Anabolism is the buildup of molecules from small to big meaning it is requiring energy.
What if you do not have enough glucose for the energy to break down?
Then your body will use proteins and fats instead in the citric acid cycle.
Describe the process anabolism does.
Anabolism will get the energy that is released from catabolism and will take it to use in building muscle, and bone tissue, producing hormones, etc. But once your body uses the energy that it needs then it will save it (glycogen) and use it for later.
What happens during the starving state?
During the starving state, this is where there is no new intake of substances or energy to get from, so what the body will do is prioritize what is left of glucose for the brain and proteins for cellular function. Once that runs out fats will be used then protein from your muscles, then possibly death.
Describe the process glucose goes through when breaking down into energy.
It starts as glucose goes under glycolysis, then results in pyruvate, then goes under the citric acid cycle, and results in Acetyl COA, then goes other processes, resulting in lots of ATP. (energy) Plus water, carbon dioxide, and heat.
