Digestive System Flashcards
Small Intestine in general
absorbs nutrients, finishes digestion, and is covered in cells such as villi that help with the absorption by increasing the surface area of it.
defecation
getting rid of solid undigested waste.
Pharynx
throat; carries food and water to the esophagus, and air else where
Large Intestine
responsible for the reabsorption of water, this is where gut bacteria live to help further digest waste, where as a result you have solid undigested matter.
Ileum
where nutrients are absorbed and reabsorb leftover digestive chemicals.
Rectum
fecal matter is stored
Duodenum
where digestion finishes, pancreatic juices are released to further digestion protein, and bile is released to shrink fats.
Jejunum
where nurtrients are being absorbed.
mechanical digestion
where you make foods into smaller pieces.
Esophagus
takes the food from the pharynx to the stomach where walks are lined with mucus to prevent irritation.
Stomach
This is where the stomach will squeeze and mix the food with chemicals, the stomach also stores food and sends it into the small intestine. Our stomach also contains acids and chemicals that help with the digestion, such as pepsin and HCL.
ingestion
the intake of a substance
Oral Cavity
This is where digestion begins meaning this is where you chew foods and make them smaller where your tongue mixes food with the chemicals, and where also salivary glands will be released to lubricate the food which within that saliva there is enzymes such as amylase and lysozyme.
chemical digestion
the breakdown of food into is molecular component.
