Metabolism Flashcards
Catabolic pathways
Release energy by breaking down complex molecules to building blocks. (Hydrolysis)
Anabolic pathways
use energy to build complex molecules from smaller ones. (Dehydration synthesis)
1st Law of Thermodynamics
energy can be transferred or transformed- it cannot be created or destroyed.
2nd Law of Thermodynamics
every energy transformation increases entropy (disorder) of universe.
-DG
spontaneous- releases energy that can be used to do work.
+ DG
not spontaneous – input of energy required to proceed.
exergonic reaction
net release of free energy and is spontaneous
endergonic reaction
absorbs free energy from its surroundings and is nonspontaneous
Adenosine Triphosphate-ATP
the major energy currency for the cell.
catalyst
chemical agent that speeds up a reaction without being consumed by the reaction
Activation energy (EA)
energy needed to start reaction.
substrate
Enzymes specific for one molecule
Competitive inhibitors
bind to the active site of an enzyme, competing with the substrate
Nonompetitive inhibitors
bind to another part of enzyme.
Allosteric Regulation
when a regulatory molecule binds to a protein at one site and affects the protein’s function at another site
