Metabolism Flashcards
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions that occur in a cell
Metabolic Pathway
A sequential series of chemical reactions that occur in all living cells
- Each reaction is catalysed by enzymes
Catabolic Pathway
Pathways that break down complex molecules into smaller ones, and release energy
Anabolic Pathway
Pathways that use energy to build smaller molecules into more complex molecules
Energy
The ability to do work
- There are 2 forms
• Kinetic
• Potential
Kinetic Energy
The energy of motion
- Heartbeat, chromosomes moving
Potential Energy
Stored energy
- Energy stored in the arrangement of the bonds in a compound (chemical)
What are the energy changes that occur during a chemical reaction
- When bonds break in a chemical reaction, energy must be absorbed (ENDOTHERMIC)
- When new bonds form in a chemical reaction, energy must be released (EXOTHERMIC)
Endothermic
The net absorption of energy (products contain more energy than reactants)
- During a chemical reaction, energy released from chemical reaction in living cells include: Thermal energy, movement of compounds across cell membrane, contraction of muscles, emission of light
Exothermic
The net release of energy (products contain less energy than reactants)
First Law of Thermodynamics
- Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transformed from one type to another and transferred from one object to another
- AKA the law of conservation of energy
Second Law of Thermodynamics
During any process, the universe tends towards entropy
Entropy
- A measure of the randomness or disorder in a collection of objects of energy
Clean room = Low entropy
Messy room = High entropy
