Metabolic Bone Disease Flashcards
What is MBD?
MBD?
.Metabolic bone disease is a disruption of calcium metabolism in the body which can be too little calcium or too much phosphorus in the diet. Which affects the strength of bones because these minerals are stored in the bones when the animal is low in calcium and phosphorus their body will get these minerals from the bones making them weaken causing metabolic bone disease.
.This disease affects the lagomorphs, reptiles, birds and many more species.
Affects for rabbits?
Affects for rabbits?
.In rabbits it causing dental disease.
.Rabbits need a constant supply of calcium for development of new dental tissue as rabbits’ teeth continue to grow throughout their life, so if they do not have enough calcium this causes dental disease.
Affects for birds?
Affects for birds?
.In birds this disease causes weakening of bones which can cause lethargy, pain, brittle beaks, claws and keel.
.As this disease causes the bones to weaken it is easy for bones to fracture as well as death if untreated.
Affects for reptiles?
Affects for reptiles?
.In reptiles this disease causes weakening of the skeletal structure. This affects the health of the Reptile as they suffer from softening of bones, problems with muscles contraction and blood clotting.
.This causes twitching of muscles in the legs and toes, lameness, limping, bone fractures, lethargy, loss of appetite and in turtles causes softening of the shell and is the result of poor care because they haven’t got enough sunlight or artificial light.
