Q

Reptile IM injection sites?

A

Reptile IM injection sites?

.Lizard - dorsal lumber muscles & quadricep muscles. The quadriceps muscles of the reptile may not be the best site for an intramuscular injection
because the renal portal system will affect the drug’s efficacy although trials have shown that as long as the reptile is fully hydrated, this concern is unwarranted.

.Chelonian - dorsal pectoral muscle. There is a limited choice because of their shell: it prevents injection into the dorsal lumbar (epaxial) muscles.

Q

Birds IM injection sites?

A

Birds IM injections sites?

.Pectoral muscle (not favoured as if they get damaged while being injected it can temporarily stop them from flying).

.Quadricep muscle

Q

Reptile venepuncture sites?

A

Reptile venepuncture?

.All reptiles possess a tough layer of scales that must be penetrated by the hypodermic needle.

.The method for venipuncture of a snake is often between the scales.

.Lizard sites - ventral abdominal vein, jugular vein & ventral coccygeal vein. Withdrawing blood although from the tail is a serious issue with lizards whose tails can be shed as a defence mechanism.

.Chelonia site - dorsal coccygeal vein.

A

The quadriceps muscles of the reptile may not be the best site for an intramuscular injection. Why might this be?

.It might not be the best site for intramuscular injection in reptiles because of the renal portal system, it may go straight to the kidneys if injected in the caudal side of the body and cause damage to the reptile, so is better to use the cranial side of the body just to be safe.

Q

Generally, can you say why a large muscle mass is a chosen site for an intramuscular injection?

A

Generally, can you say why a large muscle mass is a chosen site for an intramuscular injection?

.Because with large muscle mass it is better for absorption of the substance as it has a large surface area.

Q

Venepuncture or venipuncture means?

A

Venepuncture or venipuncture means?

.Accessing a blood vessel for e.g. blood sampling or direct injection of medication into the bloodstream. Like intramuscular injections, there are preferred sites for venepuncture.
