Metabolic acidosis (Hyperchloraemia) Flashcards
1
Q
What is metabolic acidosis?
A
Too much acid in the body’s fluid.
Blood has a low pH
Elevated levels of chloride ions (hyperchloraemia)
2
Q
What is the normal range for chloride ions?
A
103 mmol/L
3
Q
Management
A
Sodium bicarbonate (ph <7.1)
If caused by low potassium, give potassium bicarbonate
4
Q
Management - mild metabolic acidosis
A
If associated with volume depletion, manage with fluid rehydration
5
Q
What to give if sodium bicarbonate is unsuitable?
A
Trometerol
- Causes an increase in urinary pH and osmotic diuresis.
