Calcium Flashcards
What is the normal corrected calcium level?
2.1 - 2.58 mmol/L
What level is considered hypercalcaemia?
> 2.6 mmol/L
Hypercalcemia - drugs that cause it
Thiazide diuretics
Lithium
- Stimulates PTH secretion = increased calcium resorption
Vitamin D
Vitamin A
Hypcercalcaemia - management (unknown cause)
Bisphosphonates
Hypercalcaemia - management (vit D toxicity)
Steroids
Hypercalcaemia - management (malignancy)
Calcitonin
Hypercalcaemia - management (hyperparathyroidism)
Cinalcet
- Reduces parathyroid hormone, therefore calcium
Paracalcitol
- Chronic renal failure
Hypercalciuria - management
Hypercalciuria = high levels of calcium in urine
Treatment = Bendroflumethiazide
- Increase fluid intake
- Reduce dietary calcium
Hypocalcaemia
Causes osteoporosis
Hypocalcaemia - management (mild to moderate)
Vit D
Calcium supplements
Hypocalcaemia - management (severe)
Slow IV calcium gluconate
- Too rapid = arrhythmias
- IV calcium chloride = irritant
