Meosis Flashcards
What are the types of animal sex cells?
Spermocytes (male) and Oocytes (female)
Meiosis leads to what?
Variations in traits among offspring
What types of cells undergo meiosis?
Germ/Sex cells
What happens in prophase 1?
- CROSSING OVER occurs between homologous chromosomes
- Spindle forms
- Nuclear envelope disappears
- Chromosomes condense
What happens in Metaphase 1?
- Pairs of homologous chromosomes line up at spindle equator in a double-file line
- Random alignment
What happens in anaphase 1?
Homologous/duplicated chromosomes are pulled apart from its own homologue, and migrate towards opposite spindle poles
What happens in telophase 1?
- Nuclear envelope reforms
- Chromosomes decondense
- Cytokinesis
- Cell divides into 2 haploid cells
What happens in prophase II?
- NO CROSSING OVER
- Spindle forms
- Nuclear envelope disappears
- Duplicated chromosomes condense
What happens in metaphase II?
Duplicated chromosomes line up at the equator in a single-file line.
What happens in anaphase II?
Sister chromatids are pulled apart and moved to opposite spindle poles
What happens in telophase II?
- Nuclear envelope reforms
- Chromosomes decondense
- Cytokinesis
- Cell divides into 4 haploid gametes (egg or sperm)
Difference between mitosis and meiosis?
Mitosis-clones are produced
Meiosis- Variations in traits among offspring
