List the 3 components of Motivation
- Initiation of behaviour – why you started your involvement in sport
- Continuation of behaviour – why you continue with this sport
- Intensity – how intensely do you approach the sport.
List 2 types of motivation
- Extrinsic motivation
- Intrinsic motivation
Define Extrinsic motivation
Extrinsic motivation refers to external motivations that result from participation in sport eg: money, winning, fame and awards.
Give an example of Extrinsic motivation
A player coming out of contract may perform at his peak each week even if the team is losing as it will increase his chance of getting a new contract or increase his value in the trade market.
Define Intrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation in sport refers to internal motivations that result from the process of participation in sport.
Which type of motivation is better
- Elite players play for both intrinsic and extrinsic reasons – financial rewards but also self-challenge.
- Intrinsic motivation is more powerful than extrinsic motivation.

- Intrinsic motivation
Define Amotivation

Define Extrinsic motivation SDT
individual’s basic needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness partially being met
Define Intrinsic motivation SDT
