What is teh current situation
-1 in 4 people experience it
-anxiety and depression is the most common disorder
-on the rise for children and young people
-marginalized groups particularly at risk
-service massively overstretched,
Referrals increased by 25% In last 5 years
-covid 19 increased
What are reasons for it
- Shortages in work force
- (Psychiatry is underfilled speciality,
And proportion of doctors to patients has decreased.
-many applications but little post spaces
-often sent to far away inpatient units
(Being away form support networks can worsen distress and impede recovery)Long waiting list
-off putting, too long to recover treatmentIncreased demand,
-lack of funding,
(Doctors burnt out, decreases quality of care - (Psychiatry is underfilled speciality,
Negative effects of mental health being neglected
causing inequality due to lack of education
(Eg balck ppl 4 times more likely to be sectioned- which is being detained in mental hospitals bc causing potential risks ot society
-vulnerable ppl left in so they can cause harm, eg cas of Harold shipman, addicted to opioid
What are solutions for it
more investment in services for children
(Eg, one stop shop service, so communtiy centres in rural areas give free access, to assmenets and therapeutic services)
W paediatricians,
Behavioral health clinicians,
-more focus on prevtanative measures
-eg education and tackling stigmas
-overall health eg obeisty and Resrecah comp and serotonin
-investment in mental health liaosn services(so more ppl can be rapidly checked and thus treated)
What is the NHs doing about it
NHS Long Term Plan for Mental Health (2021). Most notably this included a commitment to increase mental health funding by £2.3bn a year
More investment in crisis,
-eg developed NHs 111, OFFERS FREE UNIEVRAL MENTAL HELATH SERVICE
-10 million potential investment for supporting veterans with ptsd , more marginalized groups
