mental health; topic 2 - Gottesman Flashcards
what is the AIM of the study?
to investigate how vulnerable children are to developing a mental illness when they have two parents with a mental illness, specifically those suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
what is the SAMPLE in the study?
- 196 couples, both with schizophrenia, their 270 children
- 83 couples, both with bipolar, their 146 children
- 8006 couples, one with schizophrenia, their 13878 children
- 11995 couples, one with bipolar, their 23152 children
What is the IV?
parental schizophrenia or bipolar diagnosis
what is the DV?
a diagnosis of any other mental illness
How is the IV operationalised?
parents receiving a diagnosis from the ICD
how is the DV operationalised?
the offspring receiving a diagnosis from the ICD based on the cumulative risk of developing a mental illness between the ages 10 and 52
What are the FIVE FINDINGS from the study?
- the risk was much greater for offspring with both parents
with a diagnosis - two parents with schizophrenia, the risk was 27.3%
- one parent with schizophrenia, the risk was 7%
- two parents with bipolar, the risk was 29.95%
- one parent with bipolar, the risk was 4.4%
what were the TWO CONCLUSIONS from the study?
- having both parents with a mental illness, increases the risk
of the offspring developing the same disorder or other
mental illness - having one parent with mental illness, carries a lower risk
for the offspring
