How is GAD diagnosed?
- Clinical diagnosis - 6 months of excessive worrying PLUS
- 3 of the following (Palpitations, dizziness, lightheadness, muscle tension, sleep disturbances, epigastric discomfort)
RF: Female
Criteria: DSM-V and ICD-10
May have random symptoms: Headches, backpain, muscle tension, not sleeping well.
What questionnaire do you use in GAD to assess symptoms?
GAD-7
Increased: HR, RR, trembling, Startled responses
Management of GAD
- Written leaflets on GAD - nice
- Address underlying issue, comorbid? Finance? Relationship?
- Offer CBT - individual self directed, Individual guided therapy, Pyschoeducational groups
what does GAD self care Advice include?
Sleep hygiene — such as going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, eliminating alcohol after 6 pm, avoiding caffeine after 3 pm, and getting out of bed if unable to fall asleep to avoid negative associations with the sleep environment.
The benefits of regular exercise — can improve overall health and has been shown to improve anxiety symptoms.
