How is GAD diagnosed?

A
  1. Clinical diagnosis - 6 months of excessive worrying PLUS
  2. 3 of the following (Palpitations, dizziness, lightheadness, muscle tension, sleep disturbances, epigastric discomfort)

RF: Female
Criteria: DSM-V and ICD-10

May have random symptoms: Headches, backpain, muscle tension, not sleeping well.

Management of GAD

A
  1. Written leaflets on GAD - nice
  2. Address underlying issue, comorbid? Finance? Relationship?
  3. Offer CBT - individual self directed, Individual guided therapy, Pyschoeducational groups

what does GAD self care Advice include?

A

Sleep hygiene — such as going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, eliminating alcohol after 6 pm, avoiding caffeine after 3 pm, and getting out of bed if unable to fall asleep to avoid negative associations with the sleep environment.

The benefits of regular exercise — can improve overall health and has been shown to improve anxiety symptoms.
