menstrual cycle Flashcards
1
Q
FSH
A
follice stimulating hormone; causes production and maturation of egg
- produced in pitutary gland
2
Q
LH
A
- stimulates release of egg
produced in pitiutary gland
3
Q
estrogen
A
stimuales release of LH and development of endometrium + negative feedback with FSH
4
Q
progesterone
A
maintains endometrium and inhibits FSH and LH production; if fertlization doesnt occur progesterone levels fall
5
Q
menstrual cycle steps
A
- FSH stimulates follicle maturation and ovarian production of estrogen
- higher levels of estrogen cause uterus lining to thicken and for pitutary gland to stop FSH production and intiate LH production
- LH stimulates release of mature egg on day `4. The follicle remains develop into a ‘corpus leteium’ which secretes progesterone
- progestrone maintatins lining of uterus and inhibits FSh and LH production
- when progesteron levels fall, th elining breaks down, which allows FSH production to restart
