Endocrine system Flashcards
homeostatsis
regulation and limits of bodies physiological variables (blood pH, sugar, CO2 concentration, temperature and H2O balance)
thyroxin
- thyroid gland
- increases metabolic rate and regulates body temperature
leptin
hormone produced by FAT tissue in body
targets hypothalmus of brain
regules appetite
melatonin
pineal gland
regulates circardian rythm (more produced at night to make you tired!)
insulin
hormone produced in pancreas to regulate glucose in blood
- beta cells produce insulin when there is high blood sugar
glucagon
hormone produced in pancreas
- alpha cells secrete glucagon when there is low blood sugar
type I diabetes
when B cells don’t produce enough insulin
type II diabetes
when body cell receptors don’t respond to insulin
diabetes
a metabolic disease in which the body cant produce (enough) insulin which leads to elevated glucose level in blood
low blood sugar
- glucagon released by A cells in pancreas
- glucagon breaks down glucose from glycogen
- blood sugar elevates
- liver releases glucose into blood
high blood sugar
- insulin released by B cells of pancreas
- stimulates glucose to form glycogen by condensation reaction
- blood sugar is lowered
- fat cells take in glucose from blood
