Predominately low libido, sexual arousal, orgasm

50% precursors in the ovary
50% adrenal glands
What might cause an abrupt drop in testosterone levels in women?
Medical or surgical menopause cause 50% drop
What are the unwanted side effects of testosterone replacement?
Qndrogenic: hair growth at site of application, hirsuitism, male pattern baldness, alopecia, acne, greasy skin
Rately: deepened voice and clitoromegaly
When should testosterone replacement be avoided?
Active liver disease, hormone sensitive breast cancer
What is considered a low free androgen index in women?
<1%
What is the upper limit of normal for a free androgen index in women recieving testosterone replacement?
<5%
How is testosterone replacement prescribed?
Testosterone gel, off label use, products licenced for men. NICE RECOMMENDS should only be used with hrt
How often should treatment response be assessed?
Yearly. Stop if no response after first 6 months of treatment
When should patients expect to see a response to testosterone replacement?
Within 2-3 months
What medication can be used as an alternative to testosterone treatment?
Tibolone has androgenic effects
