What is menopause?
Cessation of menstruation
What physiological changes occur in menopause?
1) Depletion of primordial follicle
2) Oestrogen levels decrease, FSH and LH increase as not inhibited by negative feedback
What happens to LH and FSH levels during menopause?
They see an increase during to no negative feedback inhibition
What are the short term symptoms found in menopause?
Hot flushes, night sweats, lethargy, irritability, decreased libido, vaginal dryness and pH change, dry skin hair and nails (brittle)
What are long term symptoms of menopause?
1) Osteoporosis
2) Increased CVD risk
What 4 treatments help with symptoms of menopause?
1) Hormone Replacement Therapy
2) Calcium supplements
3) Vitamin D supplements
4) Sedatives
What hormones are given in HRT in menopause?
1) Oestrogen
2) Progesterone
What advantage is HRT in a path compared to orally?
Hormones directly enter into the bloodstream and bypass the liver
What risks accompany HRT?
Small increased risk of cervical, breast and endometrial cancer
