Meninges overview Flashcards
What are meninges?
CT membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord
Separates the brain and spinal cord from the skull and vertebral column
Depending on where meninges are located, will either be called
cranial or spinal meninges
Remember, both cranial and spinal meninges are
continuous with each other and they consist of the same three meninges
Cranial dura mater consists of 2 layers:
An outer periosteal layer and an inner meningeal layer
The outer periosteal layer of the cranial dura mater is the layer that is in close contact with the
internal surface of the cranium
The meningeal layer of the cranial dura mater will be the innermost layer, and is in close contact with the
arachnoid mater.
How does spinal dura mater differ from the cranial dura mater?
– only consists of one layer – the meningeal layer
Pia mater is closely adherent to the
external surface of the skull
Due to their embryological and cellular similarities, the pia and arachnoid mater are collectively referred to as the
leptomeninges
Functions of the meninges
Provide a supportive framework for the cerebral and cranial vasculature
Acting with cerebrospinal fluid to protect the CNS from mechanical damage
