CENTRAL AND PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
The nervous system is divided into two main parts:
CNS
PNS
The central nervous system (CNS)
= brain and spinal cord
The peripheral nervous system (PNS)
= cranial and spinal nerves and their associated ganglia
Brain and spinal cord:
Protected by the
skull and vertebral column
The brain and spinal cord are covered by a system of membranes…
the meninges
The meninges of the brain and the spinal cord are
Continuous
The brain and spinal cord are suspended in
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
CNS is composed of neurons
Structural and functional units Excitable cells
All have the same basic organization consisting of an axon, cell body and dendrites
Supported by neuroglia
CNS internally organized into:
Dark and grey matter
Gray matter in the CNS
= darker in colour and contain nerve cell bodies
White matter in the CNS
lighter in colour and contain nerve cell processes (i.e. predominantly axons)
In PNS, cranial and spinal nerves conduct information _________________
to and from the CNS
Autonomic Nervous System
Innervates the body’s ________________________
involuntary structures (i.e. heart, smooth muscle, and glands)
Autonomic Nervous System is distributed throughout the CNS and PNS
And is divided into 2 parts _____
Sympathetic division
Parasympathetic division
