MENINGES AND SPACES Flashcards
FIRST SPACE
epidural space - space between the dura mater and skull
- Very vascular, supplies the blood for meninges
FIRST MATER
Dura mater
Composed of:
- Periosteum
- AKA endosteal layer
- Outermost layer of the skull
- Inner dura
- AKA meningeal layer
- Responsible for forming rigid membranes that
support and separate various brain structures
- Falx cerebri – membrane that dips between the
two cerebral hemispheres along the
longitudinal fissure
- Anchored anteriorly to the base of the
brain at the crista galli of the ethmoid
bone
- Tentorium cerebelli – membrane that separates
the cerebellum below from the cerebral
structures
- Landmark spot
SECOND SPACE
Subdural space – space between dura and arachnoid
Vascular – small bridging veins
Hematomas occur here when these vessels are ruptured
SECOND MATER
Arachnoid mater
- Internal to the dura mater
- Spongy, weblike structure that loosely follows the
contours of the cerebral structures
THIRD SPACE
Subarachnoid space – space between the arachnoid and the pia mater
- Contains CSF
THIRD MATER
Pia mater
- Delicate
- Adheres to the contours of the brain and spinal cord
- Provides support for the blood vessels serving the brain
- Contains anchor points of the spinal cord
- Choroid plexuses – structures producing CSF come from
pia mater
