Mendelian Genetics and Inheritance Flashcards
what is a genotype?
the genetic makeup of an organism
what is a phenotype?
the constellation of observable traits, the traits you see
how do genotypes and phenotypes relate?
A person’s genotype is their unique sequence of DNA. Phenotype is the detectable expression of this genotype
what is a dominant allele?
An allele that will always show up in the organism’s phenotype if it is present in its genetic material
What is a recessive allele?
an allele that does not produce a trait at all when only one copy is present
What is the difference between dominant and recessive alleles?
Dominant traits are traits that will be expressed even if there is one of them. Recessive traits must have both parents give the same recessive trait for it to be expressed.
What is the difference between a homozygous and heterozygous genotype?
Being homozygous for a particular gene means you inherited two identical versions. It’s the opposite of a heterozygous genotype, where the alleles are different
what is a homozygous gentotype?
Being homozygous for a particular gene means you inherited two identical versions.
What is a heterozygous genototpe?
A term that describes having two different versions of the same gen
