Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
Genes
unit of instruction located on the chromosome
-each new gene will influence a specific trait
Inherited Trait
trait that is genetically determined and pass on through generations
Heredity
action of passing on physical characteristics from one generation to the next
Allele
alternate form of a gene
Dominant Allele
Uppercase
-dominant allele completely masks the expression of the recessive allele
Recessive Allele
Lowercase
-only expressed in homozygous form (rr)
Homozygous
when both alleles of a gene pair are the same (RR or rr)
Heterozygous
when each allele of a gene is different (Rr)
Genotype
actual genetic makeup represented by letters representing the genetic code
Phenotype
what is physically expressed. Physical expression of a genotype.
Multiple Alleles
When traits are determined by more than 2 alleles
-hierarchy of dominance
Incomplete Dominance
When 2 alleles are equally dominant
- interact to form a new phenotype
- half expressed
ex. Red and White = pink
Co-Dominance
One allele does not dominate over the other, but instead they share dominance
- both alleles are fully expressed
ex. spots of colour
