What is the function of testes?
testes – production of male gametes (sperm)
What is the function of the scrotum?
scrotum – sac that holds the testes outside
the body
What is the function of the sperm ducts?
sperm ducts – transfer sperm to the urethra
What is the function of the prostate gland?
prostate gland – secrete fluids for sperm to swim in forming semen
What is the function of the urethra?
urethra – carries urine and semen out of the body
What is the function of the penis?
penis – transfers semen to vagina during sexual intercourse
What is the function of the ovaries?
ovaries – release of female gametes (eggs)
What is the function of the oviducts?
oviducts – transfers egg to uterus and the site
of fertilisation
What is the function of the uterus?
uterus – where the fetus develops
What is the function of the cervix?
cervix – ring of muscle at the opening of the uterus
What is the function of the vagina?
vagina – receives penis during sexual intercourse
What is fertilisation?
The fusion of the nuclei from a male gamete and a female gamete.
What does the amniotic sac do?
It protects the fetus during development by cushioning it from bumps to the mothers abdomen.
What connects the fetus and placenta?
The umbilical cord.
What does the placenta do?
The placenta contains the nutrients for the foetus. The movement of all molecules across the placenta occurs by diffusion as there is a difference in concentration gradients. It also acts as a barrier to prevent toxins and pathogens getting into the foetus’ blood.
