What is AO3 research evidence for types of long term memory?
A
Vargha-Khadem et al (1997)
- Investigated 3 young patients who had damage to their hippocampus but avoided significant damage to their nearby parahippocampal cortices.
- It was found that all 3 had very significant episodic amnesia, but were all able to to attend school, speak and learn and recall factual(semantic) information at an ability level just below their age
- This suggest that semantic memory is less dependant on the hippocampus than episodic memory and so is biological evidence that semantic and episodic memories are distinct processes using different using different brain regions
