[Memory] Topic 2 - The multi- store model of memory Flashcards
Who proposed the multi store model?
Atkinson and Shiffrin
How many stores does it consist of?
3
Sensory Resister
Short term memory
Long term memory
What is the sensory register?
- Where information is held at each of the 5 senses
- Capacity of the senses are large
- Duration is very limited (milliseconds)
What happens if a person’s attention is focused on one of the sensory stores?
Information gets transferred to the STM
What is held in the STM?
Information for immediate tasks
- limited duration 7+-2 chunks of information
- capacity of 18
What is Rehearsal?
Keeps information in STM, but eventually rehearsal will create a LTM. According to Atkinson and Shffrin the more information is rehearsed the better it is remembered
What is the process called where a memory is retrieved from LTM to STM
Retrieval
Evaluation 1 : One strength of the multi- store model comes from supporting laboratory evidence
- One strength of the multi- store model comes from supporting laboratory evidence
- Controlled lab studies on capacity, duration and coding support the existence of separate short and long term stores
- For example Miller found that the duration of STM is 7+-2 chunks of information and Bahrick found that the duration of LTM is approximately 48years

- This supports the idea of seperate short and long term memory stores which is the basis of the multi store model
Evaluation 2: Another strength of the multi-store model comes from supporting case studies
- Another strength of the multi-store model comes from supporting case studies
- Scoville and Milner reported the case of patient HM. His brain damage was caused by an operation to remove the hippocampus form both sides of his brain to reduce his severe epilepsy
- HM’s personality and intellect remainted incact but he could not form new LTM’s although he could remember things from before the surgery
- This supports the MSM as HM was unable to transfer information from his STM to LTM but was able to retrieve information.
