Memory & Sleep/Dreams Flashcards
What is memory?
the capacity to acquire retain and recall knowledge and skills.
We need to be able to remember and forget selectively in order to function in life
3 levels of memory
Sensory
Short term
Long term
Sensory
Recieves info the environment through each of the senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch). Sensory memory records information from these senses for only a few seconds
Short term memory
The retention of information from the environment for 15-20 seconds. Short term memory can store about 7 separate, unorganized items.
Long term memory
The retention of information for long periods of time & Recall memories regularly - a series of 15-minute study sessions will make it easier to retrieve info than a single 1-hour session.
Stages of Sleep
- falling asleep (1-7min)
- light sleep (10-25min)
- deep sleep (20-40min)
- REM SLEEP
REM
-Rapid Eye Movement
-When scientists have repeatedly awakened people from experiencing this stage, subjects become short-tempered and unable to concentrate (similar to no sleep effects)
-REM Sleep occurs mostly in morning and becomes longer as the night progresses
-Dreams are often more VISCERAL —All senses and emotions are involved
NON-REM
-These dreams happen outside of REM
-They appear to be a reenactment of events or emotions
-This type of dreaming may help us to get “smarter” or to learn
-These dreams do not tend to be violent or emotionally charged
Whats Dream Interpretation
Both Freud and Jung believed that analyzing dreams can be useful in understanding the unconscious
Freud:
Believed the people, situations, and images in dreams represented suppressed sexual desires - regardless of what the dream was about
Jung:
Believed that the symbols in dreams were the unconscious mind communicating with the conscious mind
