What are emotions made up of?
● Cognitive Component: the mental state, the conscious feeling of being happy, sad, angry or excited
● Physical Component: the physical characteristics that accompany emotional reactions
● Behavioural Component: expressing the emotions through actions, withdrawal, body language or facial expressions
Several factors shape who we are emotionally including:
○ Heredity
○ Learning
○ Maturity
Mental Health
functioning in a state of mental and emotional well-being
Stress
a physical and psychological response to circumstances in the environment that test our ability to cope
3 STAGES of stress
● Alarm Stage: individual recognizes the existing threat (fight or flight)
● Resistance: physiological changes stabilize as the individual grows accustomed to the threat (new normal)
● Exhaustion: the body becomes weaker due to the stress’ toll and thus the body becomes more vulnerable to disease or even death (crash)
Coping with Stress
● Stress reactions are physical as well as mental and emotional
● Ways to change these physical reactions to stress will vary from one individual to another ○ ○ ○ Vigorous exercise
○ Listening to music
○ Talking to a friend
○ Engaging in a hobby or sport
Mental Illness:
is the disorderly functioning of the mind

which tended to be less serious
Categories of mental illness

Psychotic Disorders
which include more serious conditions like schizophrenia- Schizophrenia: a mental disorder marked by distortion of reality, social withdrawal and disturbances of thought, perception, motor activity and emotion
Anxiety Disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder: anxiety that occurs in the mind of an individual without any obvious cause
Mood Disorders
Bipolar Disorder: a condition marked by extreme mood changes that have two stages, a manic stage and a depressive stage
Schizophrenic Disorders
a mental disorder marked by distortion of reality, social withdrawal and disturbances of thought, perception, motor activity and emotions
Personality Disorders
mental disorders that make it difficult for individuals to relate to others, function normally or hold a job
Substance-related Disorders
refer to the harmful use of substances such as alcohol, tobacco or drugs leading to significant impairment or distress
