Definition of psychology
The scientific study of behaviour and mental processes and the factors that influence these processes
What is psychology?
It is the study of the human mind and its mental states
● Includes the study of temperament and behaviour of a person or group
● Psychologists aim to describe, predict, and control behaviour and mental processes
● They study individuals as well as groups
What are the six branches of psychology?
- Structuralism
- Functionalism
- Psychoanalysis
- Behaviourism
- Humanism
- Cognitive Psychology
Structuralism
Introspection, the inner workings of the mind through observation of one’s thought processes
Functionalism
how people adapt their behaviour to surroundings, look at child development and education
Psychoanalysis
uncovering patients’ unconscious thoughts by encouraging them to discuss their background, feelings and experiences. Looks at motivation, child development, personality and abnormal behaviour
Behaviourism
studying what can be observed, looks at how individuals react to their environment & Believe that all behavioural responses are the result of environmental stimuli
Humanism
emphasizing unique qualities of humans, looks at freedom and personal growth
Cognitive Psychology
mental processes involved in memory, learning, and thinking
○ Cognitive Psychologists research the brain and its processes
○ Electronic monitoring of brain activity has allowed psychologists to pinpoint exactly what part of the brain is active when we talk, laugh, or do anything else
