Flashbulb memories

A

An accurate + exceptionally vivid long-lasting memory. These memories are effected by our emotional state

Q

How does age affect FM

A

Younger adults in general are more likely to form flashbulb memories + they will often recall them for different reasons.

Q

Explanatory power

A

A STRENGTH - gives us a good understanding of the structure and processes of the STM- allowing researchers to expand on this model.
- provides a basis for future models to be developed as psychologists improve on the msm. Provides a clear direction for future research.

Q

Supporting research

A

STRENGTH- HM CASE STUDY- provides objective data, so not open to bias.
- can be tested + high reliability.
- many studies provide evidence to support the distinction between STM and LTM, and can coconut for primary-recency effects.

Q

The model is oversimplified (types of stm and LTM )
Hm case study !

A

Whilst HM supports this model, he also highlights why it is incorrect.
- suggests that there are multiple stores within the LTM, as he was able to recall mems from over 10 yrs ago, suggesting they were stored separately / differently.

16
Q

The model is oversimplified

A

Other models showed that the STM is more than just one, unitary store .
- in the case of LTM, it is unlikely that different kinds of knowledge are all stored within the same long-term mems store.
Eg episodic vs. Semantic

17
Q

The mode over emphasises the role of rehearsal
(Elaborative rehearsal)

A

Limitation- rehearsal is considered too simple of an explanation to account for the transfer of info from the stm —> LTM .
Eg it ignores other factors such as motivation., or effect and strategy, which both underpin learning.

Also rehearsal is not essential to transfer info into the LTM, eg swimming whereas sometimes we cannot remember info we rehearsed.
Therefore it may be much less important than they originally suggested.
