memory c6-7+ lecture Flashcards
what is acquisition
the process of gaining information and placing it into memory
what is storage
where you hold the acquired infromation in memory until it is retreived
what is retriveal
you locate the information in the memory stroage and bring it back into active use
what is the modal model
The working memory serves both as a storage site for material now being contemplated and as a loading dock for long-term memory. information can reach WM through the process of perception, or it can be drawn from LTM
working memory focuses on what
the content in the mind now
What is sensory memory
holds on to the input in raw sensory form. where information is first stored when it arrives
why do we need sensory memory
for the attention to work we need a breif holding mechanisim to find what we are looking for, too much information in sensory memory can not all go to WM
what is part os sensory memory
ionic memory and echoic memory
what is apart of LTM
declarative (explicit memeory) and non declarative (implicit memory)
what is declarative memory
common from of memory you can talk about it conciously
what is non-declartive memory
memeory that you do not need to think about conciously
what is ionic memeory
Visual inputs that fade away after a few seconds, which is why it is not able to recall the most recent letters in a row
what is working memory
The storage system in which information is held while that information is being worked on all indications are that the WM system, not a single entity, and that information is held there through active processes, not a passage storage
what are the two phenonmeons sensory memory is responsible for
visible persistence and informational persistence
What is visual persistence
the previous movement in time is visible in a new movement
what is informational persistence
infromation that is contained still, has access to meaning but someimes later because you havent interpreted it yet
What is episodic memory
knowledge about events
what is the partial report condition
How much information is stored in your sensory system if you are given a group of letters to report back and you don’t know what row you will be asked? You assume you had access to all the rows at once.
what is primacy effect
the observed memory advantage for the early list items since they dont have to share attnetion with other items they have more time to reherse
what is the recency effect
dumping out of information in the working memory, it is driven by information that sticks in the STM
what is working memory capacity
not about storage or memory, but the capacity for controlled, sustained attention in the face of interface or distraction
what are high working memory individuals better at
filtering out unattended information
what is the digital span task
