Memory Flashcards
What is Coding?
The format in which information is stored in the brain
What is Capacity?
The amount of information that can be stored in the brain
What is duration?
The length of time information can be held in the brain
What is Episodic Memory?
Memory of life events
What is Semantic Memory?
Memory of definitions and meanings (like a personal dictionary)
What is Procedural Memory?
Memory of learned skills (like riding a bike)
What is the Central Executive?
The component of the WMM that allocates ‘jobs’ to the three subsystems systems
What is the Phonological Loop?
The component of the WMM that process audial information. Divided into the phonological store and the articulatory process
What is the Phonological Store in the PL?
A store for what you hear
What is the Articulatory Process in the PL?
Allows maintenance rehearsal
What is the Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad?
The component of the WMM that processes visual and spatial information in a mental space (often called our ‘inner eye’)
What is the Episodic Buffer?
The component of the WMM that brings together material from the other subsystems into a single memory and provides a bridge between working memory and long-term memory
What is Interference?
Forgetting because one memory blocks another
What is Proactive Interference
When old memories interfere with new memories
What is Retroactive Interference?
When new memories interfere with old memories
What is Retrieval Failure?
When we forget because we don’t have cues to prompt recall
What is a Cue?
A ‘trigger’ of information that prompts recall
What is Misleading Information?
Incorrect information given to an eyewitness (often after the event)
What is a Leading Question?
A question that suggests a certain answer due to the way it’s phrased
What is Post-event Discussion?
When witnesses discuss what they have seen with other co-witnesses
What is Eyewitness Testimony?
The ability to remember the details of an event after it has happened
What is anxiety (Topic : Memory)
A state of emotional and physical arousal where we feel worried and tense.
What is the Cognitive Interview?
A method of interviewing eyewitnesses to help them to retrieve more accurate memories.
What are the 4 steps of the Cognitive Interview?
- Report everything
- Reinstate the context
- Reverse the order
- Change perspective
What factors can affect EWT?
- Misleading information
- Anxiety
What are the 2 types of interference?
Proactive and Retroactive
