What did Lorenz find in his animal study?
The ducklings that he raised, when given the option between the mother duck and him, followed him and vice versa
What did Harlow find in his animal study?
The baby monkey spent 17-18 hours a day with the cloth mother, and only 1 with the wire mother. They sought the cloth mother for comfort when frightened
What is Monotropy?
The idea that the child’s attachment to one caregiver is different and more important than others
What is the Law of Continuity?
The more constant and predictable a child’s care, the better the quality of their attachment
What is the Law of Accumulated Separation?
The effects of every separation from the mothers add up (“The safest does is therefore zero”)
What are social releasers?
Behaviours that encourage attention from adults (e.g. smiling, cooing and gripping)
What is the Critical Period?
A period around 6 mothers where if an attachment is not formed, a child will find it harder to form one later
What is Reciprocity?
When a caregiver and infant interact and respond to each other’s signals which elicits a response from the other
What is Interactional Synchrony?
Caregiver and baby reflect both the actions and emotions of the other and do this in a co-ordinated way
What is Separation?
The child not being in the presence of the primary attachment figure
What is Deprivation?
Lack of emotional care
What is Privation?
Absolutely no emotional care
What is Institutionalisation?
The effects of living in an institutional setting for a long period of time
