MEMORY Flashcards
Define the display system
physical enviroment the learner is performing in
What are the four receptor systems
- visual
- auditory
- touch
- kinathesis
Explain the perceptual mechanisms
Interprets information from display / receptor systems
Detection - detects important stimulus
Compasison - compares to LTM
Recigniton - info identifies response
Explain translatory mechanisms
Decision making occurs here, info from the perceptual mechanism is used to select the correct response in the form of a motor program.
Explain the effector mechanism
motor program puts into action by sending impulses to the muscles
muscular system & output data
- muscles need to recieve impulses
- action is preformed
define selective attention
“the ability to focus attention on relevant info and to ignore / filter out irrelevant info
How does good perception affect performance
- make sense of & interpret info
- selectively attend to relevant info
- speeds up decision making
where is SA located
between the STSS and STM
what is the functions of selective attention
- filter out irrelevant info
- recieve info from STSS
- send info to STM
- speed up decision making
- focus on cues
- stimulus indentification
define the short term sensory store
takes in info that has been processed by sensory receptiors
v large capacity
holds for 0.25-0.5s
state three strategies to imrpove memory
- mental practise
- focus
- rewards / motives
Define reaction time
time taken from the onset of the stimulus to the onset of the response
Define response time
time taken from the onset of the stimulus to the completion of the movement
state three factors affecting reaction time
- age
- intensity of stimulus
- predictability
state three ways to improve reaction time
- pay attention
- practise reponding to simulus
- increase anticipation
Explain the difference between complex & simple reaction time
complex has numerous stimulis, more responses and slower reaction time. whereas simple has one stimulus with one possible reaction.
What does Hick’s law state
the more choices you have, the longer the reaction time will be.
define the psychological refractory period
one way for the performer to increase the response time of their oponent is by presenting false information eg dummy
define anticipation
attempting to predict when a movement will happen
temporal vs spacial
predicting when an action will be preformed vs predicting what action will be preformed
outline single channel hypothesis
one signal must be cleared before another can be responded to
