Memory Flashcards
What is involved in memory?
The encoding storage and retrieval of information
What are examples of Memories
Past experiences, knowledge and thoughts
What is encoding?
Encoding is transferring information into memory
Describe sensory memory
Sensory memory holds information for a few weeks only selected emotions and sounds are encoded into short term memory
Describe short term memory
It has a limited capacity in hold information for a short time
How is information lost from short term
 displacement and decay
What is a method of increasing the capacity of short-term memory span?
Chunking
How is information retained in the short term memory
 rehearsal
What is serial position effect?
Objects in the middle of a list are more likely to be forgotten than those at the beginning or the end
Why are objects at the end of the list remembered?
 they are still in STM
Short term memory can also process data to a limited extent as well as student. What does this working memory model explain
Why the STM can perform simple, cognitive tasks
Describe long-term memory
It has a limited capacity and hold information for a long time
How is information transferred from STM to LTM
by rehearsal, organisation and elaboration
Describe rehearsal
 the repeating of information
Describe organisation
It involves putting information into related groups
