Memory - 02 Types of LTM Episodic, Semantic, Procedural Flashcards
What ate the different types of LTM
semantic
episodic
procedural
Who first proposed that LTM was not a single store?
Tulving
What is semantic memory?
-knowledge of the world, facts and meaning of things like words
-these memories usually need to be recalled deliberately
What are episodic memories?
-personal memories, associations of a particular place or time
-time-stamped
-have to make a conscious effort to recall episodic memories
What are procedural memories?
-learning motor skills
-memories for actions or skills
-can be recalled without conscious awareness
research support for types of LTM (brain scans)
-different areas of brain active when different LTM are active
-episodic memory hippocampus and frontal lobe
-semantic memory temporal lobe
-procedural memory cerebellum
research support for types of LTM (HM)
-ability to form new LTMs affected by destruction of hippocampus
-could still form new procedural memories but not episodic or semantic
-supports idea of different LTM stores
weakness of types of LTM (two or three types of LTM)
-Cohen & Squires disagree with Tulving
-agree that procedural memories represent one type of LTM
-BUT argue episodic and semantic memories stored together in one store, declarative memory
-reduces validity of Tulving’s idea of 3 stores of LTM
