Memory - 01 (1-Features of STM and LTM) Flashcards
What is STM?
Your memory for immediate events
What is LTM?
Your memory for events that have happened in the past
What is capacity?
The amount of information that can be stored in your memory at any one time
What is duration?
How long your memory lasts for
What is coding?
The format in which information is stored in the various memory stores
What is the capacity of LTM?
Potentially unlimited
Who investigated the capacity of STM?
Jacobs (1897)
How did Jacobs investigate the capacity of STM?
-Lab experiment
-Digit-span test
-presented with list of digits/letters followed by serial recall (pace kept 1/2 second by metronome)
-List increased by 1 digit until p’s constantly failed to recall it
-Longest sequence length that was correctly recalled 50% of the time was taken as their STM span
What did Jacobs find to be the capacity of STM?
Between 5 and 9 items
What was recalled better in Jacobs’ capacity study?
digits
According to Jacobs’ study what happened to STM capacity as you got older?
It increased
