Membranes, transport and tissues Flashcards
Osmosis
Diffusion of water across a membrane.
Isotonic
Same solute concentration on both sides of a membrane.
Channel proteins
Passages which allow for passage across a membrane without energy.
Sodium-potassium pumps
Pass sodium out and potassium into a cell to create a gradient.
Exocytosis
The cell spits stuff out in a vesicle.
Endocytosis
A cell picks stuff up via a vesicle.
Types of endocytosis
Phagocytosis, pinocytosis, receptor mediated endocytosis.
Tissue
A group of cells which work together to perform a function.
Tissue types
Nervous, muscle, epithelial, connective.
Histology
The study of tissues
Neurons
Cells which generate and conduct electrical signals.
Parts of a neuron
Dendrites, cell body, axon
Glial cells
Cells which support and protect neurons.
Skeletal muscle
Striated muscle which is attached to and pulls on bones.
Skeletal muscle cells
Striated and polynucleated.
