Integumentary System Flashcards
Functions of the skin
Protection from infection and temperature, maintaining fluid balance, synthesizing vitamin D.
Components of the integumentary system
Skin, nails, hair, sweat and oil glands.
Epidermis
Outermost layer of the skin.
Melanocyte
Epidermal cell which produces melanin.
Langerhans/ dendritic cells
Epidermal cells which ingest invaders.
Merkel / tactile cells
Epidermal cells which combine with nerve endings to form sensory receptors at the bottom of the epidermis.
Stratum corneum
First layer of the epidermis. Consists of 20-30 sheets of dead keratinocytes.
Stratum lucidum
Second layer of the epidermis. Consists of 2-3 sheets of flat, clear, dead keratinocytes. Found only in thick-skinned areas.
Stratum granuolsum
Third layer of the epidermis. Layer of living keratinocytes.
Stratum spinosum
Fourth layer of the epidermis. Contains dendrites which cause it to clump together.
Stratum basale
Fifth layer of the epidermis. Consists of a single layer of columnar cells.
Parts of the dermis
Papillary and reticular layers.
Contents of the dermis
Collagen, elastin, capillaries and nerves.
Papillary layer
Top 20% of the dermis. Consists of areolar connective tissue.
Dermal papillae
Projections within the papillary layer which cause friction ridges and finger prints.
