Membranes and Transport Flashcards
1
Q
Types of Transport
A
- Diffusion
- Osmosis
- Passive Transport
- Active Transport
- Endocytosis
- Recptor Mediated Endocytosis
- Exocytosis
2
Q
Diffusion
A
- Movement of molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration
- down a concentration gradient
- can occur in air, in liquid, or across a membrane
- small uncharged molecules
- Ex. O2and CO2
3
Q
Osmosis
A
- Specilized type of diffusion
- moves H20 from a high concentration to a low concentration
- moves water through Aqua Porins
4
Q
Hypertonic Solutions
A
- environment that has a higher solute level than the cells found in that solution
5
Q
Hypotonic Solutions
A
- environment that has a lower solute level than the cells found in that solution
6
Q
Isotonic Solutions
A
- environment that has the same solute level as the cells found in that solution
7
Q
Passive Transport
A
- Large or charged molecules
- Requires a protein
- moves molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration
- ex. salt, sugar, ions
8
Q
Active Transport
A
- Large or charged molecules
- Requires a protein and ATP
- moves molecules from a low concentration to a high concentration
- against the concentration gradient
- ex. salt, sugar, ions
9
Q
Endocytosis
A
- Movement of molecules into a cell in bulk
- Phagocytosis- cell eating
- Pinocytosis- cell drinking
10
Q
Receptor Mediated Endocytosis
A
- Endocytosis with receptors
11
Q
Exocytosis
A
- movement of molecules out of a cell in bulk
