Membranes Flashcards
What is metabolism?
All of the chemical reactions that take place in a cell
What can control metabolism?
Protein Pores, Protein Pumps and Membrane-Bound Enzymes
What are protein pores?
Channel-forming proteins which only allow specific molecules to cross membranes
What is an example of a membrane-bound enzyme?
ATP synthase- When hydrogen ions that have been pumped across the membrane passes through ATP synthase, ADP and Pi is used to make ATP
What are protein pumps?
Certain proteins on the cell membrane that act as carrier molecules which transfer specific ions across the cell membrane. They require energy
What is an example of a dual role protein pump?
The sodium/potassium pump which actively pumps sodium ions put of the cell and potassium ions into the cell, both against their own concentration gradient
Why is the membrane referred to as fluid?
The phospholipid bilayer can move; proteins can move laterally
Why is the membrane referred to as mosaic?
The proteins can be arranged in a patchwork-like pattern in or on the phospholipid bilayer, like a mosaic
