Enzymes Flashcards
What is induced fit?
When a substrate binds to the active site and the active site wraps around the substrate. This increases the rate of reaction
What do enzymes do to the activation energy?
Lower it
How is the active site of the enzyme linked to a lower activation energy?
It holds the substrates into the correct position for a reaction to take place
What allows a reaction to take place at a lower temperature?
Enzymes provide an alternative metabolic pathway for reactions, allowing a reduced Ea
What is competitive inhibition?
When the inhibitor molecule competes for the active site by binding to it. It will have a similar structure to the enzyme substrate and interfere with the active site, so the substrate cannot bind
What is non-competitive inhibition?
When the inhibitor molecule binds to another part of the enzyme. This alters the shape of the enzyme and the active site, so the substrate can no longer fit
What is feedback inhibition?
When a product lowers the activity of an enzyme in its synthesis path
