Electron Transport Chain Flashcards
What is the electron transport chain?
A series of proteins attached to the inner mitochondrial membrane
Where does the electron transport chain occur?
The cristae of the mitochondria
What happens to the high energy electrons which were released in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle?
They are passed to the electron transport chain where they release energy
What happens to the released energy?
It pumps hydrogen ions across the mitochondrial membrane to the inter-membrane space.
How is ATP generated?
Through the return flow of hydrogen back into the matrix through ATP synthase. Generated from ADP+Pi
What is the final hydrogen acceptor?
Oxygen, which combines with hydrogen to form water
